For the time being, LinkedIn has become a large media for the companies as well as for the
officials to communicate with others. But it looks like some of the Chinese people has been
using this media to espionage on German officials and politicians. This has been alleged by
German intelligence officials (BfV).
Almost 10k Germans have been targeted so far and Germans are afraid that those people might
be used as informants.
A major number of fake accounts are to blame for this purpose.
According to German intelligence agency’s (BfV) head Hans-Georg Maassen, “This is a broad-
based attempt to infiltrate in particular parliaments, ministries and government agencies.”
Though China has been denied all those allegations that have put against them in the past. They
are yet to respond to the German allegations.
BfV in fact found and published 8 active profiles that has been used to contact German LinkedIn
users. Those fake profiles are made in such a way that looks very enticing also to promote young
Chinese professionals; but the bottom line is that they don’t even exist.
One of the account holders named, Alen Liu who’s known to be a human resource manager at an
economic consultancy according to his LinkedIn profile. Same goes for Lily Wu, who reportedly
works at a think tank in eastern China.
These above accounts are spotted to be fake by BfV.
Since the firm thinks that the Chinese intelligence is using to the media to recruit high ranking
politicians as informants, this worries them sick.
The German officers have been asked if they believe to be targeted by suspicious accounts. Last
year, the BfV said they had detected “increasingly aggressive cyber-espionage” including
“intensifying” attempts to influence September's parliamentary elections.
They said the hacker group known as "Fancy Bear" or APT28 was especially active – and it is
believed to be controlled by the Russian state.
